District land office Receivers were responsible for all financial transactions relating to the sale of public lands. They were required to submit a quarterly account of unearned fees and unofficial moneys received and disbursed to the U.S. General Land Office. This account provided a summary of the "detailed monthly statements of unearned fees and unoffical moneys." Each month Receivers recorded credits: date money received, who received from and why, amount received; and debits: date money disbursed, who disbursed to and why, amount disbursed. The Receivers were also required to submit a recapitulation for each quarter containing the totals received and disbursed for various types of transactions: 1) purchase money; 2) fees and commissions; 3) cancellation fees; 4) testimony fees in contest cases; 5) sale of public timber; 6) paid to publishers; and 7) returned to depositors. An instruction letter from the U.S. Land Commissioner is pasted in the front of the volume. Each quarterly account is signed and certified by the Receiver. These records document the financial aspects of public land sales and illustrate the complex duties of district land office Receivers.
